Overview
The problem: Restaurant vendors need to find a way to comply with convoluted California privacy compliance laws, and existing data privacy compliance services do not adapt to the needs and questions restaurant owners may have.
How might we allow different restaurant vendors to make informed decisions about data privacy compliance? And how might we design a data solution that allows clients to efficiently and confidently begin the process of privacy compliance?
Deliverables
Platform Bulb needed to build a minimum viable product of:
1. An initial audit assessment for new and returning customers of the service that allows both parties to evaluate whether the restaurant is an eligible client for Platform Bulb
2. A main website to establish Platform Bulb’s service to potential clients.
User Needs and Insights
I created three user personas that would allow me to further understand the problems that Platform Bulb can address, and how exactly the website can facilitate deeper understanding and create a more informed decision when it comes to data privacy options.
Comparative Analysis: OneTrust’s Website
To understand how similar services display the problem of privacy compliance and their respective solutions, I researched the website and platform of the industry leader in data and privacy information: OneTrust.
Much of their website emphasized the reliability and security of their services, and highlighted many client testimonies and industry recognition in order to reinforce the sense of trust and credibility.

Hi-Fi Mockups: Highlighting Platform Bulb’s Niche
Informed by the users’ needs and insights and after iterating upon a low fidelity sketch, I developed a high fidelity design of Platform Bulb’s main website.
The user is met with a home page that displays fast and easy access to the demo, as well as examples of specific restaurant clients that Platform Bulb has worked with in order to give the user an idea of whether or not Bulb is right for them. I sought to highlight the specialized function of Platform Bulb for restaurants through highlighting Bulb’s integration features, comprehensive case studies, and a resources and integration information page.

Audit Assessment Information Architecture
To better guide the design of the Platform Bulb audit assessment, I developed the information architecture of the auditing platform. A client would be able to freely access and edit their personal information, as well as complete and return to any step of the audit given that they meet certain requirements to qualify for Platform Bulb’s services.
Low-Fi Prototypes: Platform Bulb Audit Assessment
Using the information architecture previously established, I began to design the audit assessment platform. The scope of this product was quite large, and due to the time limit of this project, I made the decision to prioritize the main audit question screens.

I iterated on my low-fidelity designs and made a few additions to make the user experience smoother for various situations: namely, a progress bar for users to view their current progression on a section, a more noticeable help button that allowed users to simultaneously see the audit question, and vertically scrolling questions so users could get a quick idea of each section.
At the end of my internship, I presented the high-fidelity prototypes of the website and audit product to the CEO of Platform Bulb’s parent company.

Conclusions and Takeaways
Due to the constraints of my internship, I was not able to conduct a few extra steps that I believe would have even better informed my design choices. If I were to continue or expand on these products, I would implement:
Learning how to be the sole designer in a small team. It would have been deeply beneficial to be able to receive design critiques from other senior designers that would have advised my projects, but I learned to iterate on my own designs and constantly be looking for ways to improve the experience and design of the products.
Taking initiative and ownership of your products. Similarly, as the sole design intern, I had full ownership of the look and flow of the audit and the website. I learned to constantly propose potential ideas and evaluate how certain features could add to the overall UX of the product — and ultimately was very rewarding to have such ownership.
Revisiting the scope of projects. Because the internship and my projects had a very limited time frame, I had to make decisions on how to prioritize certain features or aspects of a product to be completed.
